London Tonight: Friday September 22nd

Evening - it's practically the weekend and we're going rock-tastic tonight.

Tamzin's been to the Edge (geddit??) to get an interview with U2 - she's even got Bono's thoughts on Tony Blair - so you won't want to miss that.

And as if that's not enough for one girl, she's gone totally weak at the knees at the prospect of her teen years hearthtrob, Chris Isaak, coming into the studio live - he's promising to serenade her - and she's keeping her fingers crossed that it'll be Wicked Game. So, one satisfied customer tonight - hope you will be too by 6.30!

We've our usual guide to the weekend movie releases and what else to do in the capital - including how YOU can become part of a new ITV programme.

Willsy's looking ahead to a weekend of sport - and he's excited tonight too - about our competition for a luxurious golfing weekend away.... We keep telling him he's not allow to enter, but I think I'll have to confiscate his mobile phone just in case...

Our top story tonight is the report findings on how London coped on the day of the terror bombings - some criticism, some praise - but interesting stories from the non-injured victims, who felt they didn't know what to do or where to turn on the day. Piers has the details on that one - and we'll be asking for your thoughts on what we've learnt and what we still need to learn.

And remember the elderly lady evicted from her home in a row over legal fees? We've an update on that you won't want to miss.

London Tonight: Thursday 21st September

Afternoon everyone,

Thursday afternoon already... that light gleaming at the end of the tunnel is a dirty great lie-in on Saturday morning. (Apologies to those with young children.)

Now, this evening's programme - and we start with an exclusive interview with Jane Bowden, the fiancee of Peter Woodhams. He was shot dead outside his home in Custom House 4 weeks ago today. Now, while the hunt for his killer goes on, Jane is moving the last of her possessions out of that home. As Piers Hopkirk will explain, she can't bear to live there with their young son anymore.

Yesterday, a man not known for his pro-Government views, Abu Izzadeen, challenged the Home Secretary as he addressed the Muslim community in Leyton. "How dare you come to a Muslim area?" John Reid was asked. Well, that poses certain questions about London's multicultural society. Simon Harris will try to come up with some answers.

She's 74 years old and she's just won a court battle over 3 inches of land. However, the judge ordered Malica Markos to pay her neighbour's court costs. She can't afford to do that - and today she's been left sobbing in the street as her house was re-posessed and boarded up.
Paul Fitzgerald has the full story from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

Who remembers the Green Cross Code man, Tufty and his gang, Charley the Cat - all warning young children of the dangers in life. If you do, you're as old as we are. Chrissie (much younger than we are) has been taking a look at 60 years of safety films ahead of a season of them at the National Theatre.

Meanwhile Phil Bayles reports on your chance to be immortalised as a wax-faced bus-conductor - but it'll cost you. Not him telling you, that is... being immortalised. Steve Hargrave has the back-stage low-down on Beyonce's no-show at the Mobo awards. Someone who WILL show tonight is the pub landlord, Al Murray, in the studio to talk about another Secret Policeman's Ball. Oh, and then we'll be giving away a pair of tickets to the Ball itself.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Tues 19th Sept

Hello!

Tamzin is back from her well earned break and Katie is presenting the ITV Evening News at 6.30 - so Tamzin is in one of the hot-seats tonight!

She only got back at the weekend so wasn't able to interview Oliver Stone about his powerful and controversial 9/11 film WORLD TRADE CENTER. Steve has done a great job, however, and we're sure you will find it fascinating.

Talking of 9/11, we're sure you will all remember that day in August when Heathrow and other airports ground to a halt as an alleged plot to blow airliners out of the skies was discovered. In the days and weeks that followed security was tightened, bag allowances changed, liquids banned and all the rest of it. Very sensible. To make us safe.
So, how come a man could fly to Amsterdam using his 2 year old daughter's passport????? Liz is finding out on your behalf.

London's telephone numbers have been through a lot of changes in recent years: 01 - 020 - and more to come. But cast your mind back to Whitehall 1212 and Mayfair 3423 - ah, those were the days of black bakelite hand sets and women pushing and pulling plugs in manual exchanges. Well the telephone directories of that age are going "on-line" and it's given Damian the chance to take a look back at the old days when Britain's phone system was owned and controlled by a division of Her Majesty's Post Office.

A man in Croydon may have seen his fixed penalty payment get lost in the post or it may have got lost at either end of its journey: either way, the authorities seemed to lose track of it. So they picked up his car. And sold it! He got it back but, as Ronke explains, he now has even more reasons to be angry.

Also, what the Met' told the Courts about their responsibilities over the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and a full round up of all the news that matters.

And, hurricane or heatwave by the end of the week? "Maybe both" said Chrissie at our meeting: she'll tell you why at the end of the show.

Glen was first in this morning so off he went ..... (all 4' 8 of him... with his shoes and socks firmly on, so we can't help with that bit!)

Becks? Like Pete's mum, the Golden Boy is also bookish today, signing copies of his autobiography. Simon has gone on his trail from Greenwich to Oxford Street.

We also have the final chapter in a brutal and yet intriguing story of paedophilia. Sent to prison today for 13 years, a man who, publicly, was Mr Nice Guy in the borough architect's office. But secretly, he disguised himself to assault young girls. Piers has the full story.

London Fashion Week sees a dream come true for a Hackney woman, as Ben will explain.

London Tonight: Friday September 15th

Hi. Sorry we are a little later than normal but we had a two minutes silence for West Ham's result last night and it lasted longer than it should have.
Our Ken is still in mourning but the rest of us keep saying First Leg. First Leg.....

Now tonight a fascinating story that could affect us all. The problem of affordable housing is real and immediate. It has to be solved and, inevitably, we're all going to have to help.
So, we looked at Westminster's ingenious solution: offer people living in Council Houses that are now too big for them a chance - and a bit of a sweetener - to move out to a smaller place and let the needy in.
It sounded a good idea and it turned into a brilliant idea. But Westminster are running out of cash for the sweeteners. So will it stop? Will others find the money to have a go? Will the Mayor or the Government step in to keep it going?
Phil has been exploring.

We all know we have a drug problem in London and we are all angry that it is wrecking so many young lives. But we are shocked to discover how many young youngsters, 9-12, who are involved not only as users but also as dealers. Glen has been looking at the worrying numbers.

Daddy Cool is the latest retro musical, a tribute to the work of 70s stars BONEY M. (Romilly says she remembers all the words and Alastair says he can even remember dancing to them). Stars of the West End show, Javine (rear of the Year) and Harvey (So Solid Crew) are with us!!!!

Stuart here again - Editor of London Tonight - updating you on the programme this evening.

Alastair and Romilly are presenting this evening, and our top story involves the theft of mobile phones. You'd think once your phone was reported stolen it would be blocked - and it would become useless. An ITV London investigation has found otherwise. There's a full report on London Tonight - and a whole programme on the issue later at 7.30pm.

Also tonight - an incredible story about a restaurant where a certain Mr Mourinho often books a table. The staff there were rather amazed to find a bugging device in a plug socket. Someone listening in to Chelsea's team talk? Or maybe just someone after the receipe for the restaurant's lasagne? Simon Harris finds out..

Glen Goodman's out on the river - Ben Scotchbrook's got the story of a black cab driver who was asked to take a couple of lads rather further south of the river than is usual - and Jamelia is with us in the studio.

London Tonight: Wednesday September 13th

Hello All,

Dramatic goings on in Kent today .. And you don't often get to say that. The police are claiming they've carried out their biggest even guns seizure, swooping on a house in Dartford at 6 this morning, arresting a 55 year old man, and making off with hundreds of guns. It's not a straightforward tale.. The man arrested did have a gun license, but police are sure this is a significant victory in the battle on illegal weapons in this country. Ronke's there to explain all.

Hugo Chavez is the president of Venezuela. You may remember there was some controversy when he visited London earlier this year .. Not everyone was thrilled that our mayor was hobnobbing with a man who'd been pretty damning about America and Britain in the past. Well now the friendship that was burgeoning then between Ken and Hugo looks set to be sealed with a goodwill deal. Apparently we're going to advise them on policing and housing - and in return we're going to get some cheap oil for our buses. Sounds .. Well .. A little strange, doesn't it? The Tories certainly think so, and have been grilling Ken during Question Time today. We'll have all the background.

We've a report on the growing drugs horror of speedballing .. we talk to a user of this deadly cocaine and heroine mixture .. And find out just how widespread its use has become...

Cyclists are going to be under scrutiny for wobbly and dangerous riding .... Ben's got his helmet on (controversial in itself these days.. ) and is finding out more ...

Afternoon ...

Tonight's show really covers all the bases, from outrage, sadness ... to, i'm happy to say, hilarity and awe .. As we have the legend that is Mr David Hasselhoff on the programme. Oh yes, the Hoff is in the studio...

First up ... Ken did warn us ... Tube and bus fares would have to go over the next few years. But by a third? Yes, you read that correctly .... If you don't use your oyster card, come next January a single tube journey will go up from 3 pounds to 4, a bus journey from 1.50 to �2 ... What do you think? We want to know.

We've got an exclusive interview with the father of Peter Woodhams, the young man gunned down outside his home. He's begging for information, and for anyone shielding the murderer to break their silence. It's powerful and emotional stuff.

And the powerful stuff doesn't stop there, as we'll be in in New York for the 5th anniversary of 9/11. The pictures still have a shocking power, and we'll be talking to the mother of a young Londoner who died that day. We'll also be at the London offices of Cantor Fitzgerald; you'll remember that it was a firm who's New York office was devastated in the atrocity. Today they've been hosting a huge charitable appeal, with a number of sporting heroes doing their bit, including that new royal world champion, Zara Philips.

We've some good news for London house hunters, with details of a new shared ownership scheme which could, just could, allow you to get a foot on the property ladder even if you're not loaded...

But ... The highlight has to be the Hoff. He's in the Guinness book of records as the most watched man on television. He's huge in Germany as ein Rock Star. He's been having a bit of a tough time with the British tabloids . He's got a new autobiography out and he could well have a new number one single. He's also very tall .. And he's in our studio. Alastair's busy interviewing a major politician for tonight's national ITV News - and with Tamzin enjoying a few days off - Romilly is joining us as our other presenter tonight. She's busy getting her head around the programme, so I'm writing the email this afternoon.

Tonight we start with the story of Rocky Dawson, shot dead in front of his young children in Hornchurch. Police have done something they've never done before - offered a �20,000 reward - just for an address. There's someone they want to speak to about the crime - tonight we'll show that person's picture and ask if you know where they live. We also hear from Rocky's family in their only television interview.

Also - an incredible film from an incredible young man. Thomas Ikimi's cousin was Anthony Fatayi-Williams, who was killed in the July 7th attacks last year. Thomas has spent the last year documenting how his family have come to terms with those events. Tonight he's also made us a film - all about it. It's powerful stuff.

That plus we hear from Sigourney Weaver - Willsy's got the sport - and Chrissie's here with the weekend weather.

Oh - and the final of our "Future London" series - as we ask a sci-fi writer to predict how the capital will cope in the years ahead.

Crikey! What a day! Will he? Won't he? In the end, Tony Blair ended all the talk right here at a secondary school in North London - by kind of telling us what we pretty much knew - he will stand down by next year - but won't give a precise date. Well, it all happened at a school in St John's Wood and Simon Harris has been speaking to the youngsters who had a schoolday they'll never forget.

But our top story tonight - and the one we want to hear from you on - is the sheer anger of a mum whose 11 year old daughter isn't allowed on the free school bus, because she hasn't been christened.
It's a church school and they say only children who have been christened or whose parents live in the parish are eligible - is it fair? Watch Jon's report and you tell us.

LONDON TONIGHT: Wednesday September 6th

Afternoon ..

Major developments in the murder case which is our main story in London tonight. A 17 year old is in custody over the stabbing of grandmother Carmelita Tulloch in Vauxhall yesterday morning.
Jon Gilbert will have the latest on that.

Another mystery ... But however it happened, a car careered off the road in Stamford Hill this morning, through some school gates, into the school itself, only coming to a halt in a classroom. Miraculously, no one was killed, though there have been some injuries. Simon Harris has been trying to find out what happened.

In the worthy and seemingly endless efforts to get us all to go green, we've got a couple of reports for you tonight .. First, Piers Hopkirk saddles up to try out a new scheme to get us to borrow communal bikes, to cycle around London .... Are we all honest enough? And then we spend some time with the Murphy family in Sheen, seeing how they've been changing their ways to save the planet.

But then we get showbiz. Seriously, proper showbiz. John Barry might not be a name you immediately recognise.. But you'll undoubtedly know the tunes he's composed..... Goldfinger... Born Free... Yes, this man is a god when it comes to film music, and he was rightly recognised as such with a lifetime achievement award at the Mercury Music prize last night . Steve Hargrave went to meet him. And then Bob Geldof's been in a film. About Bob Geldof lookalikes. ....

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Sept 5th 2006

Afternoon...

The breaking news that is going to be dominating our show tonight is, I'm afraid, the brutal murder of a woman this morning in Vauxhall. It seems it was a random and vicious killing; the woman was on her way to work, but she was seen being stabbed repeatedly. Worryingly, the killer is still at large, and there is a huge police operation underway. We'll have all the latest.

From a shocking story though to one which might also beggar belief .. but this time in that "what will they think of next" kind of way.... yes, Mayor Ken, never happier than when he's got teams of consultants working on rebranding something, has come up with a new name for, wait for it ... trains. Yes, from now on, we'll have the underground and the ... overground. No Wombling jokes please. Oh, ok then, maybe just a few.

We hear from the Heathrow worker who's about to be sacked for having a funky hairstyle which hasn't changed for years... and from Jo Wood, Ronnie's missis, about how she's turned herself and her whole family green. As in environmentally friendly, that is. We've got football courtesy of those handy new Argentineans who've arrived at West Ham, and last but most definitely not least, we sent our ace reporter Sharon Thomas to meet one of her all time heroes. It just happens to be Brian May, him from Queen with the curly hair and matching wife. Well, someone has to be his Number One Fan, don't they?

LONDON TONIGHT: Monday September 4th

Hello and welcome to the start of another week of London Tonight!

Great excitement from the Boss this morning: he saw the Harry Potter team filming at King's Cross at the weekend: trains and movies, just two of his "things" !
Greater excitement as we have Ron Weasley and his mum on the programme - NOT in their Harry Potter roles but as the stars of a new movie DRIVING LESSONS. Julie Waters and Rupert Grint have been talking to Steve Hargrave.

Nothing magical these days about fingerprints: compared to DNA they are almost old-hat in the world of forensics. Nevertheless, there was some debate, resulting in both alarm and support, when we discovered kids at Holland Park School are to have their fingerprints scanned on arrival. It is not a crime-busting initiative, rather a C21st way of taking the register! Sensible or an invasion of the youngsters' privacy? Your thoughts will be asked for after you've heard Piers' report.

Also tonight, extra work for street sweepers or a great new adventure for the capital's information hungry citizens? The latest "freebie" has hit the streets - bringing to four the number of give-away papers being thrust in your direction -morning, noon and night. Nick Ferrari, who nearly edited a London paper, gives us his views.

Culture Secretary and Dulwich MP Tessa Jowell is in Beijing to see what the 2012 team can learn from the inscrutable Chinese. Good idea, said some of the team: another Ministerial junket, said others! You decide when you've heard from Phil.

And Green Living: our property slot tonight takes a look at the latest ideas for living Green, saving the Planet and cutting back on those nasty carbon emissions. It's going to be a theme all week so stayed tuned and save the world from damaging climate change!

September limps in, with a spit of rain on an over-cast day: we'll take that as a challenge to lift your spirits and gear you up for a great weekend!

We're kicking off with an extraordinary, international story of deceit and destruction.
A gang, targetting up-market cars, has been busted by the Met. We've terrific helecopter shots of the swoop on the crew that hit on Mercs and Beemers and, within hours, allegedly stripped them down to parts and crushed what remained. Their market was north Africa! It is a fascinating story and a costly crime brought to an abrupt end.
Ben is the man with the motors.

More on the West Ham story that started yesterday with the slightly mysterious purchase of two Argentine internationals and moved, today, to the Stock Exchange amid hot speculation that the Hammers are coming under the hammer! Willsy has the latest live from Upton Park.

Troubled by stray cats or urban foxes in your garden? Chessington Zoo has a weird answer that will work but may leave you with your nose turned up, as Phil will explain!!!

Tamzin has crafted another comprehensive list of What Not to Miss this weekend and James is with us taking a look at Michael Douglas in The Sentinel and Nicholas Cage in the remake of the Wicker Man.

And last, but by no means least, a wonderful story about a man, on the other side of the world, who has paid what we think it a unique tribute to our Mayor.

LONDON TONIGHT: Thursday London 31st

Hello!

We're topping off tonight with some comments by London Mayor Ken Livingstone about Trevor Phillips - he, of course, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality. Ken and he don't see eye to eye on multicultural issues - and you know Ken, he doesn't mince his words.

And what does your bin say about you? We're not talking hygiene - or even the personal documents you throw out with the trash... But rather a scheme that's creeping in slowly whereby councils are putting electronic chips in the bins - to monitor our waste.
Big brother gone mad? You tell us..

Piers has been inside the Primrose Hill squat that's ruffling feathers with the locals .. And strange goings on at Visit London.
At the start of today, they were talking about a celebration of "multicultural English" in Trafalgar Square tomorrow - it's even mentioned in one of today's tabloids. Now, though, they've scrapped the idea... We liked it though, so Glen's got everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about creps, yards and skets...

And you'll never believe where Chrissie is tonight - and she has a fantastic competition that you won't want to miss.

LONDON TONIGHT: Wednesday August 30th

Hello there...

The Dome. White elephant, stunning landmark ... Whatever you think about it, it could soon have a whole new lease of life as Britain's first super casino. At least that's what it's hoping ... If it beats off competition from 6 other bids from the likes of Blackpool (imagine. .. Las Vegas with donkey rides.. ) . The pitches for the contract began today amid howls of protest that it's a done deal for Greenwich .. And equally loud howls from the Casino Advisory Panel that the odds aren't stacked in the Dome's favour, and that there's still everything to play for. Ben Scotchbrook's got his croupier's eye-shade on and is investigating...

We'll be hearing the tale of woe of one London family who's holiday luggage went missing for 19 days courtesy of BA . That's bad enough .. But when the bags finally turned up, everything, contents included, was ruined. Enter London Tonight, on a white charger...

Phil Bayles has been reading all about it as Londoners face the prospect of not one but two new free newspapers to fill all those hours commuting home, while Liz Wickham's been on the set of a new gritty drama in East London which is making stars of the local kids.

What with that and of course Chrissie with the weather, you've loads to look forward to ...

LONDON TONIGHT: Tuesday August 29th

We are both back from holidays and look forward to having you with us at 6!

Hope you had a good Bank Holiday weekend.
How many of you had an extra day off???? South West Trains certainly must have made it very tempting as yet another day of disruption hit the commuter where it hurts.
The RMT Union mounted the first of three days of strike action from midnight last night: it is about putting managers to work on previous strike days as well as the continuing row over late-night transport for workers doing unsocial hours.
The boss of SWT is live to explain how it has come to this and what will happen on the next two strike days.

There's a fire in Piccadilly, as we write: it is close to the Royal Academy but apparantly that beautiful building and its pictures are safe. But we are keeping an eye on things and Faye Barker will have the latest.

Things are also hotting up over plans for London's Super Casino: the group who want to build it claim it has the support of multi-faith groups: multi-faith groups have made it clear they don't. Oops! A spin too far? Piers is at the table on your behalf.

Entertainment for the younger generation has always been big business but now the off-spring of a big businessman and one of the biggest names in rock have teamed up for teenage festivities. Peaches is Bob Geldof's pride and joy and, coming around on the conveyor belt with her is Charlotte Woodruff, Yo Sushi founder Simon Woodruff's delightful daughter. Charlotte tells all to Jon Gilbert.

Still with the stars, Michael Douglas is in town and Jasmine's been to talk to him about his latest venture on screen.

We've a packed show tonight to get you in the mood for a long weekend....

It's a well known fact that there are more rats in the capital than people and the numbers are growing and growing...but now so are the rats. Get ready for the super-sized rodent. Where's that pied piper when you need him ? Maybe our very own Piers Hopkirk will step in with his penny whistle as he reports on this worrying trend.

Tamzin and Ben will be 'out front' once again this evening. At the moment though they're struggling to comfort Catherine, the programme editor, who's most perplexed to hear that Pluto is no longer a planet. It's official: the International Astronomical Union says it ain't big enough. Catherine sees this as a bitter blow to her view of the universe. The rest of us thought Pluto was Mickey Mouse's dog. Anyway, planet, rock, or dog, Pluto is just outside our news patch - so we'll leave that there.

However, a story that will move everyone in the London area is the murder of Peter Woodhams, shot dead outside his own home. He was slashed with a knife 7 months ago but his distraught finacee claims the police never took enough interest in their complaint - and that had they done, he may be alive today. This evening, in her first and only in-depth TV interview, Peter's fiancee talks Ronke Phillips, and tells her what she makes of that apology.

Meanwhile, Phil Bayles has been playing with dolls. Not just any dolls, mind, but little figures dressed in different Premier League-style team-strips. They're called 'Little Hooliganz'... and the Premier League is looking into whether they've breached clubs' rights. See what you think of them.

Now, last week, it was A-level students on the edge of their seats. Today it's been the poor blighters opening their GCSE results. We've all seen TV pictures of the successful kids, screaming with delight after they see a long list of 'A's. (Congratulations, if that's you, by the way.) However, Piers Hopkirk will also report on teenagers whose results fell short of the mark LAST year, and how a Prince's Trust course has left them a lot happier THIS year.

And if it's happy endings you're after, you'll love the story of a mechanic from Blackpool who, next month, takes centre-stage at the Royal Albert Hall. Not bad, when you consider that in the meantime he found himself sleeping on a park-bench... right over the road from the Albert Hall. Liz Wickham will tell us the whole story.

Finally, after listening to cows mooing yesterday, Chrissie has been chasing a pelican today - in Kent, of all places. She'll tell us all about that... before telling us all about the weather.
