LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Mon 20th Nov

Hello and welcome to another week of London Tonight.

We start with chaos on London transport but end with high hopes for a new departure. Metronet are in deep ordour again for falling badly behind with engineering work at the weekend and causing endless strife on the tube this morning. A strike by some bus crews added to the pandemonium - I am amazed any of us got here! Piers has the details, assuming he is able to get to his location.

The upbeat element is the launch of a consultation on a cross-London tram network, and the interesting twist is that the route in North-South. Answers on a postcard to TfL please! Simon Harris is our "clippy" tonight.

Still with the transport theme, Westminster Council are removing many of their parking meters because some people out there have started the process already! Take a chain-saw to them and the bad guys can yield as much as £20k a street: I always thought parking was too expensive! Anyway, they are going to try texting instead which does seem a good idea.

We also have the good idea of some of the big hotel chains talking to some of the homelessness charities about how they might help with one of London's most enduring and unacceptable problems. It isn't just a hand-out: it's brain-storming for some lasting solutions as Damien will explain. We're up for that, too!

Beyonce has been talking to Steve Hargrave and we have a thousand pounds worth of shopping to give away, with a personal shopper to help you blow the lot at Debenhams.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Fri 17th Nov

It is Friday, but you know that.

So, Alastair and Tamzin hereby issue you with their customary invitation to an hour of great news and entertainment on ITV1.

What you might not know is that our fantastic Peoples' Millions feature comes to a glorious end tonight: another winner you voted for and the best runner-up. We've really enjoyed doing this with the Big Lottery Fund people and it has warmed even the hardest hearts to see the faces of the winners when Glen tiptoes in with a cheque that is bigger than he is under his arm. We're going to give you a lovely reminder of the unbridled joy the winners showed when they got the goodies from him. Not a dry eye in the house!

We are also taking a look at the Euro Millions Lottery: 28 of the top 40 busiest ticket sales sites are in London, and most of them are in Canary Wharf or the City! Haven't they got enough already???? Marcus seems to think so. (Truth to tell, we have a little newsroom flutter on it too - but, given top ITV News West Ham fan Ken is in charge, relegation rather than riches seems the most likely outcome...)

We'd like to relegate, from the human race, the people who have been smuggling rare and endangered creatures and letting some of them die. It is a hideous story but one Ronke will tell with compassion if not a little anger.

James will tell us what he thinks of Casino Royale and Willsy has all the sport including a great competition for youngsters who fancy their chances in training with the tennis prodigy Andy Murray.

A round up of the rest of the news and Robin with his surreal weather would seem to bring it to a perfect outcome.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: 16th Nov 2006

Good afternoon,

We start Thursday's programme with a murder that could have been, in fact SHOULD have been prevented.. Denis Finnegan was killed as he cycled through a London park. Stabbed to death by John Barrett, a mentally ill man who should never have been at liberty to kill. Tonight we've details of what an inquiry has called "serious failures" on the part of Springfield secure hospital in Tooting.

We've also a gruesome tale of a Surrey pig farmer who's today been sentenced to life for murdering his wife, even though her body has never been found. The jury heard testimony from his ex-wife that he'd threatened to kill HER and feed her to his animals. Marcus Powell has more at 6.

Our very own Olympic Athlete (otherwise known as political correspondent Simon Harris) has taken a plane to sunny Barcelona, to catch up with Seb Coe and Tessa Jowell on a fact finding mission. It's been a bad few weeks for the team....as costs seem to spiral out of control. Can they learn anything from our Spanish friends ?

And a showbiz double Whammy...first Sting tells us of his work for the Princes Trust. Then (much to Alastair's over-excitement) Nelly Furtado joins us in the studio for a chat about her win at last night's World Music Awards and Michael Jackson's bizarre appearance there.

All that AND we give away thousands of pounds to a very deserving cause with the latest of our People's Millions cheques.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Weds 15th Nov

Good afternoon.

Bad news, I'm afraid. Many of you are going to say "I told you so" tonight. Because we've done the sums, and it seems that the London Olympics are going to cost TWICE what was thought. Yes, twice. The bill now looks set to be a massive 5 billion pounds, and of course the games are still 6 years away. The Olympic Delivery Authority have admitted that costs will be "substantially more " than expected. And I think we can all agree that double IS "substantially more". We'll be asking for your thoughts on this ... I suspect you'll have lots to say.

Good news though for another worthy winner of the People's Millions tonight.. Didn't you love those excited kids who'd won last night? And 2 more hopefuls for you to vote for too.

Chris has been talking to Sting about all sorts of stuff ... including the environment and playing the lute..

Tamzin's at the World Music Awards at Earl's Court. And no, it's not a celebration of Peruvian nose flute music. We're talking HUGE stars .. Beyonce and the like. It's the first time they've been held here, but the really big news is that Michael Jackson is going to perform. Yes, Wacko himself, on stage for the first time in this country in 9 years, and for the first time anywhere since he was cleared of the child molestation charges. History indeed...

Good afternoon !

We are safely back on terra firma after our Lusty lurch into the land of the tar: hope you enjoyed it even if it was a bit cold!

Now, in the spirit of warmth and pre-Christmas kindness, tonight's programme is most generous in its offering to you: we will take you, live, to the premiere of the new James Bond movie: Tamzin will be there and she's got Daniel Craig in her sights...

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Mon 13th Nov

Hello from the London Tonight team.

It was a very different journey to work for Alastair today. Forget South West Trains, leaves on the line in Woking, iced up points around Norbiton and a broken down train at Earlsfield (before SWT complain, I should point out there were none of those problems this morning. That I know of). For Alastair, this morning it was a Chinook ride onto HMS Illustrious on the Thames.

Why? Well, we've a very special programme tonight, live from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier.

We'll show you Alastair's flight - we'll see a day in the life of the flagship - and we'll talk live to the Captain.

All that - plus the People's Millions is back - tonight you can vote for the project you want to get a fifty thousand pound "Big Lottery Fund" grant.

And we're on the Cutty Sark to find out how the renovations are going on that unique vessel.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Fri 10th Nov

Good Afternoon,

It's chilly outside, so stay in with us. There's plenty to keep you informed and entertained on tonight's programme.

We start with a terrifying tale of robbers who snatched people off the street and forced them to hand over their pin numbers - before raiding their bank accounts. Full details at six.

Elsewhere, a tale we think is a bit of a talking point. An animal centre in Kensal Green claims it's under threat .... because of new parking restrictions. The problem, a residents parking zone will mean ambulances, on standby for sick creatures, will no longer be able to park outside for free. The solution, so say its supporters, is to make the Mayhew Animal Centre a special case and exempt it from the new rules. We'll be bringing you the details and asking for your opinions.

It's all aboard The Illustrious for our reporter Phil Bayles. The aircraft carrier's in the Thames ahead of Poppy Day on Sunday and Phil's live in Greenwich for us with a sailor's eye view of the Royal Navy Flagship.

It's Friday so a bumper hamper of entertainment's on offer. We've an interview with dance act Faithless, a trip to the movies with our critic James King AND of course our usual whizz round a whole raft of ideas for things to keep you busy in the capital this weekend.

Chrissie's getting into the nautical spirit too...she's broadcasting her weather report live from the Cutty Sark.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Weds 8th Nov

Good Afternoon and Welcome to our mid-week message!

Gone but not forgotten, our dear Mayor winged his merry way to Venezuela to finalise the oil-for-public-services-advice deal last week...... but then decided he'd go via Cuba to have a chat about the Olympics..... and pop in to see how Fidel Castro was doing.
Now Ken is a serial election winner in Brent and for London Mayor but, hard to believe, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez suddenly decided Ken might not help HIS election prospects so the visit was cancelled. Odd? It gets odder. Arriving back at Gatwick this morning, not a word passed the normally over-worked lips of our Mayor. Instead he just hummed. And hummed. Simon Harris is trying to get to the bottom of this Latin American-cum-Cuban mystery.

Fighting gun crime is an absolute priority for the Met because it is an absolute priority for most Londoners. Rock stars, fashion icons, youth leaders - all have spoken out against gun-crime in an effort to dissuade young Londoners from carrying and using guns.
So why are Puma producing a new trainer with an image of a machine gun on them, with the slogan 'I Steal For A Living'? And why are they launching the new fashion-shoe in London? We are concerned and think you might be, too. So Phil is on the case and we want to know what you think.

Different sort of fashion: you'll need a dinner suit or long-frock if you win tonight's spectacular competition: tickets for the premiere of latest Bond blockbuster Casino Royale. Strut your stuff on the red-carpet but you must be dressed to the nines. Details at 6.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Tues 7th Nov

Hi there.

Its a dreadful question but what do you think is the biggest killer of young people in London. Cancer? Drugs? Alcohol? Or what about violence....knives or guns?

Well its none of the above. Watch at 6 to find out...you'll be shocked and surprised as London Tonight highlights the campaign to tackle it.

Now Mayor Ken Livingstone might be a long way from the capital but he's never far away from the headlines. This time Ken is in hot water...or perhaps that should be oil over a visit to Venezuela where he was supposed to be discussing a supply of the black stuff for London. All sorts of excuses have been given but the long and the short of it is Mayor Ken didn't meet with President Chavez and now he's got to justify the cost of the trip. We've more on this tonight.

On the lighter side of life we've got an amazing James Bond competition with a trip to Nice and loads of goodies for the winner, we'll be taking a look at a massive night in the history of Southend United as they entertain Premiership leaders Manchester United in the Carling Cup and then there's the latest band to re-unite, Genesis are getting back together, Phil Collins and all, for a World tour.

Oh yes and Chrissie Reidy's been up in a flying boat as well!

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Mon 6th Nov

Afternoon everyone.

Hope you all had a lovely weekend with lots of very loud fireworks. Shame they went on until 5 in the morning...

And it looks like there'll be fireworks at City Hall for some time to come. Remember last week's surprise when the Mayor of London rocked up in Cuba? "We weren't expecting that", we said. "Well", says Ken, "that's because we wanted the media to concentrate on my trip to Venezuela"...
Fair enough. So we did. Only now he's not going. We're TOLD the trip's been cancelled at the 11th hour because elections in Venezuela mean President Chavez won't have enough time to chat with our Mayor. Seems a bit strange to us... AND to Simon Harris who was waiting in Caracas with open microphone. He'll have the full story nonetheless.

Next, a horrific story about bullying - not just name-calling or pushing and shoving in the playground. Last November, Natashia Jackman was stabbed in the eye with a pair of scissors at school in Surrey - and she talks about her experience for the first time today, even claiming the school tried to make her feel responsible.

Marcus Powell reports on the tragic tale of Charlotte Adams - hit and killed by a car as she walked home from a Christmas party. At the wheel, one Emmanuel Amoah, wasn't qualified to drive and he ran from the scene. But there was no running from justice today as he was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court.

In a very different vein, anyone who saw 'X-Factor' on Saturday will have seen a very cross Simon Cowell indeed - the 'King of the Caustic Comment' not a little put out that one of his acts got the old 'heave-ho'. He's rather optimistic about the prospects of a new signing of his though - a choir of kids called 'Angelis'. Jasmine Lowson's been to meet them.

Now - question: What do you want from a home? Well, it seems ladies want one thing - and men want something completely different. Cue lots of jokes. Architects designing flats though take it all very seriously indeed, actually tailoring blocks of flats to boys'... or girls' needs. Damien Steward has the low-down on that.

And what's more - Phil Bayles will have news to put a smile on green-campaigners living in the Heathrow flightpath... one of London's biggest stores puts a smile on the faces of those who lost thousands when a Christmas savings company collapsed... and let's hope Chrissie can put a smile on all our faces with her look at the weather.

DATELINE CARACAS by Simon Harris

Well, it makes a change from City Hall. We have been here 24 hours now awaiting the arrival of Ken Livingstone, so what are my first impressions of this extraordinary city? It is very chaotic and certainly dangerous. Consider this: the local off licence next to the hotel does not have grills and bars as protection but a very powerful man with a bullet proof vest, a sawn off shotgun and a belt full of cartridges!

Most of us when we travel rely on a checklist of essential items to ensure nothing vital is left at home. Passport, currency, suntan lotion etc. For this trip I added one extra item. A poppy. After all we are just days away from November 11th. It turned out to be a big mistake. Caracas is a violent place (see above) and never more so than during an election campaign. Venezuela goes to the polls on December 3rd and the campaign is in full swing. It is almost certainly one reason why Ken Livingstone is here. The current president, Hugo Chavez is a left-winger with some explosisve anti-American opinions. Our mayor is his new best amigo. There are almost two dozen candidates but the front runners are Chavez (champion of the poor) and Manuel Rosales (favourite of the middle classes). Rosales' supporters wear blue, the Chavistas dress in red. They haven't heard of the British Legion here, let alone Poppy Day. So if someone walks through arrivals at Caracas airport with a red flower in their lapel it can only mean one thing. He must be a Chavista. That almost certainly accounts for the chilly reception I got from the front desk at the hotel. But it could have been worse. A colleague from another news organisation was lucky to escape a severe beating from a Chavez supporter. His crime? He was wearing a Nike baseball cap. Blue.

I am afraid to say the poppy will not be making another appearance in Caracas.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Fri Nov 3rd

Hello!

Friday November 3rd - and just forty eight hours from Bonfire Night. Lots of us have been chatting about Sunday night - some are going to school events, a few are off to the Battersea bash and others are planning something in their own back gardens.

It's fireworks, bonfires, warm wine, hot chocolate and marshmallows time again.
Unless you live in Tower Hamlets.

The Council have funded a firework event for sometime but this year the organisers don't want a Guy... nor do they even want a fire. That's because it would bring back memories of the 17th century Catholic plot, led by Guy Fawkes, to blow up the Houses of Parliament as King James 1st ( 6th of Scotland, and a Stuart points out Alastair ) performed the State Opening of Parliament, and the cruel and unusual punishments meted out to poor old Guido and his incendiary buddies.
So, instead, there will be the reading of a Bengali folk tale.

The temperature of the "politically correct Vs politically incorrect" debate in our office was enough to mull a gallon or eight of wine and roast a million marshmallows.
Marcus will report and Tamzin and Alastair will ask you for your views

Old Man River should pull his weight a bit more when it comes to global warming, some say. And London's network of Canals. Well he and they will, Estelle tells us. Think less Eddie Stobbart and more Ancient Mariner and you'll be on the right track.

Its enough to make you cry.... Tracks of My Tears and.... Tears of a Clown: it must be a case of smoke getting in your eyes..... sorry, I'm off on one: Tamzin has been talking to vocal legend Smokey Robinson. Ah - what a combination.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: 2nd Nov 2006

Afternoon: sorry we are a little later than usual but we have been rushing around trying to make sense of some complicated stuff....
....not least the shooting of an alleged armed robber - (we have to say 'alleged' for legal reasons which is just a small example of how careful we have to be with stories like this).
Anyway, it seems the team, or some members of the team, who shot Jean Charles de Menezes dead at Stockwell Tube station were in action a few days back at a building society in New Romney, Kent. A man was shot dead and there's to be an investigation - that is par for the course. But there's an almighty row about whether it was a Stockwell Team member who fired the fatal shot: and, if it was, was it a bit early for him or her to be back on the job....? Ben will make sense of it for you.

You may have heard the very moving readings on radio of letters a dad wrote to his daughter, despite the fact that she had been killed in a level crossing accident. Jasmin has been to meet him and I defy you not to be touched by his love and passion.

The Olympics will bring no quick fix to London's tourism industry so says the European Association of Travel Agents. Kill joys or the bringing of wise and sober warnings? Estelle speaks a number of languages and will let you know.

Ken is going to Venezuela: we knew but were told to keep it a secret for security reasons which we did until he blurted it out on the radio (That's two mentions of the radio: Ed.) (That's because I listen to radio in the morning rather than watch TV: Alastair). Marcus wants to know why and so do we and we think you might too. Apparently it is about oil for transport advice. With me now is a Black Cab driver... Or not, perhaps!

Jeremy Clarkson gets very Jeremy Clarkson about fast cars, petrol cans and other utterly riveting things from the MPH show. Divided opinion on this one so you decide but I'll warn you, even the antis think it's funny.....

And Chrissie will, on this freezing November evening, tell us why September and October were the hottest on record and what lies ahead in her magic world of meteorological mystery!

London Tonight: Wednesday November 1st

We start with a couple of shockers: Michael Stone the convicted Ulster Loyalist killer tells us, in his first TV interview, why he had Ken Livingstone in his sights: literally.
And American Jack Lemley, the former Head of Delivery for the 2012 Olympics, quit amicably two weeks ago. Now he's told American journalists it was all because of meddling politicians and spiralling costs. Not a word of that was said when he left amid back-slapping and glad-handing. Who was spinning whom and what is the real truth? Simon Harris is on the case.

Also this evening Jon Gilbert looks at a dramatic rescue and recovery exercise on the Thames that just left the survivors and victims' families of the Marchioness disaster asking why so many of the safety promises, made in the wake of the tragedy, remain unfulfilled.

And the premiere of a movie which is a kind of SpinalTap for the 21st century: Steve Hargrave treads the red carpet as Tamzin stays in the warm alongside Alastair.

London Tonight; Tuesday 31st October

Afternoon!

Now then. His dad's a notorious rabble rousing Muslim cleric, challenging convictions for incitement to murder and race hate offences. He himself was jailed for a terrorist offence in Yemen, plotting to bomb targets in the US and the UK. And yet he manages to get a job on the London Underground. He doesn't work there anymore... But now Mayor Livingstone has waded in with both size 10's, saying that he doesn't have a problem with this young man working for London Underground, as he doesn't actually have a criminal record in Britain. We speak to one woman who lost her sister on July 7th ... And she is extremely upset by the Mayor's comments. We'd like your views on that one too.

We've day one of the trial of 2 teenagers charged with killing young lawyer Tom ap Rhys Price just yards from his home earlier this year, stabbed at Kensal Rise tube station.

We've reports of a really serious health warning on a new shock horror flick out this week: Saw III .. Not my favourite kind of movie I must confess .. And it seems I'm not alone. The London Ambulence Service have already had so many call-outs from people who've either fainted or felt queasy during the film that they're telling people not to go if they're faint hearted. Is this a case of any publicity is good publicity?

We're at the footy as Chelsea take on Barcelona, and with Angels the costumiers on their busiest night of the year... Pumpkin suit, anyone?!

And then for a touch of showbiz, we're live on the red carpet at TV's oscars, the National TV awards.. Hosted by Sir Trev, attended by a galaxy of your favourite telly stars. Gorgeous.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Mon 30th Oct

Afternoon,

Hope you all had a lovely, relaxing weekend with plenty of DIY for those who love it, and not a paint-brush in sight for those who don't. (It's okay to admit it.)

Now, this evening's programme and we start with the most appalling story. Last Christmas, Billy Gregory was murdered in a Woolwich pub - today his killer was jailed for life. For Billy's family though, the fight for justice goes on because his brother, Terry, was ALSO murdered... Christmas time 2002. Ronke Phillips has been speaking to their family.

Marcus Powell, meanwhile, has the latest on hundreds of families' battle over Buncefield. The oil depot blaze in December last year forced them out of their homes and, they say, hit them hard in the pocket. What they want is the company that owns the plant to admit liability. It could be a long journey and it began in the High Court today.

A rather quicker journey, come 2012, will be the train-trip from St Pancras to the East End or, more precisely, London's Olympic village. All thanks to the 'Javelin' a new train that, ahem, SHOULD be up and running then. It's not been built yet so Simon Harris has been playing with models.

Glen Goodman, though, went to the zoo. Bless. And while he was there he took a look at a young bird (steady...) that's rather lucky to be here. The Socorro dove died out in the wild back in 1974, but London Zoo is hoping the new addition will father a whole new generation.

There's a new frontline in the fight against knife culture.It's at one of our busiest stations and it involves scanning passengers using a metal detector.But you don't have to go through it, so just how useful is it going to be?

A notorious bottleneck in Surrey is heading for a cure.Any driver caught in tailbacks on the A3 in Hindhead will welcome the plan, which involves digging a tunnel in a scheme costing more than 300 million.It'll cut through National Trust land, but trust bosses say they have to be pragmatic and have given the plan their blessing.

Right ho.

We've just heard the Kiyan Prince murder trial jury's gone home again, so another day of waiting for his family.

Meanwhile though, the shocking tale of a young student who drank a bottle of water after a party.. not knowing it had been spiked with liquid ecstacy, the date rape drug. It didn't just drug her.. it killed her. Ben's been investigating.

We're at the Arsenal... at the new Emirates stadium to be precise, where they were expecting the Queen today to open it officially. Sadly she couldn't go, as she'd pulled a muscle in her back, so send Philip instead. We are wondering if they'd already engraved the plaque.. ?!

A story that could be the nanny state gone mad.. or a caring employer. One council has banned people from smoking in their own homes, if a member of the council staff, like someone delivering meals on wheels for example, is visiting. What do you think? Your comments please.

We're in Paris for the launch of the Tour de France.. Why? Because next year it actually starts in London, which is going to be an amazing spectacle .. and a good dry run for the Olympics, too.

WILD CAT CHASE by Marcus Powell

An hysterical woman phones Essex police to say she's seen a puma on the prowl. Cue major investigation.

The Weald country park near Brentwood is not exactly the place you'd expect to see an American mountain, more the back woods of Essex, but the wildlife round here is apparently extraordinary.

A police armed response unit and helicopter were sent out, yet this morning there were just a few tame park animals about - although a herd of wildlife photographers were on the prowl - so we were taking no chances. I stayed parked safely in a car seat while my cameraman sampled the wilds of Essex but he's had hostile environment training - which is more than I have.

We told the rangers we were in search of a puma or the dead deer which had been savaged. So apparently were 200 other people who'd all been alerted by the police, but all the deer were happy and healthy so surely this was just a wild cat chase. Undeterred and knowing Pumas live in trees we went out fearlessly on foot.

Then we saw it large - black - and legging it -but no its an old shaggy dog - some story!

So was anyone taken in? You'd have thought after 50 sightings in recent years - and not a Puma caught - the police might have given up the chase. We have....

London Tonight: Wednesday October 25th

Hello everyone.

Time to get your goat again: where do you stand on Chelsea Tractors - 4x4 Fiends - and, now, Richmond Range Rovers? Lots of us love 'em, even envy 'em - but most of us accept that many of them are mega-polluters. (Not all, however, as a recent survey showed that one, the Hummer, was rather better than you might have thought.....)
Anyway, Richmond Council wants to slap a higher parking permit price on them in a bid to save that delightful bit of the planet that is south west London and north east Surrey. Simon's on the case and we want to hear your thoughts. Peep-peep!

We're talking to the lovely Zoe Ball about saving the planet's most endangered species: celebrities get to chose the one they most want to save. Quite why Michael Portillio went for the Hyacinth Macaw is beyond us though we can only assume that David Suchet used his "little grey cells" to choose the Giant Panda.
Anyway it's a lavish new ITV series where you will be invited to take part: Zoe explains all.

And to cap off the theme of making the world a better place we are running a competition where you can win a wind turbine to cut your electric bill ... or the voucher-equivalent. Tune in to have a chance.

By the way, if you think you've seen a puma in Brentwood you may very well have seen a puma in Brentwood. A nervous Marcus, still recovering from having been stomped on by a dancing, prancing horse has gone all Sherlock Holmes for us in north London.

A train fell off the tracks at Waterloo last night: no-one hurt but lots really fed up with the delays that are still continuing. It even made Alastair late this morning - but not so late that he isn't poised to have a grumble! Ben's down at Waterloo.
Borat is in Leicester Square! The scourge of Kazakhstan hits the silver screen tonight and Tamzin is there for you - lucky minx.

LIGHTING UP LONDON by Stuart Thomas, Editor

If you've got lights on a timeswitch in your house, you'll know that - as the nights draw in - you need to keep changing that timeswitch to make sure you don't end up in the dark.
Well, it's the same for St Paul's Cathedral.
Every year in mid-October I ring up the good people at the Corporation of London and remind them that it's getting darker earlier, and that London Tonight viewers can't see St Pauls.
If you've watched the programme in the last couple of nights, you'll know it's now very dark by about 6.15pm - and you can't see much behind our presenters. In fact it's pitch black. Well, I've made the call. Now we wait.. and if you know anyone with a very bright torch, drop me a line.

London Tonight: Tuesday 24th October

Good afternoon from all in the London Tonight newsroom!

Tamzin is being her normal, brilliant and flexible self: she's been out talking to the stars of Dirty Dancing which curtains-up this evening in the West End AND she is joining Alastair in the hot seat for what is looking like a great show.

Remember FAREPAK, the savings club which went broke despite tons of people having put their cash into it hoping for a bumper hamper for Christmas? Well, we've found a street full of people who are staring a gloomy Christmas in the eye because their money is gone and their hamper isn't coming. Well we have their story and some really good news: a "give-away" just for them and other victims of the FAREPAK collapse. We haven't got hampers but we've got something else to bring a smile to lots of faces this half-term: but you've got to be a victim and you've got to be watching at 6 to take part!

James Whale, another shock-jock and ranting 'paper columnist says he's the man to be London's next Mayor... in UPIK colours. See if he takes your fancy when we talk to him live at 6.

We've had ponies in the park and riding lessons in the shadow of the Hammersmith flyover: now, and much to Alastair's delight, we bring you the real Ferraris of the horsey world: not a feast of flat racing but the beautiful prancing horses of Austria's Spanish School of Riding: a joy to behold! Marcus has put his jodhpurs and riding hat on just for you!

Couldn't persuade Chrissie to don the same attire but she'll look the belle of the ball anyway as she brings you her weather at the end of the show.

Afternoon

A really sad story to start our programme with tonight. They were childhood sweethearts, with a grown up family enjoying a holiday together in Greece, when a freak storm hit. Keiron and Frances Conlon were overcome as they paddled in the sea and were drowned. Their children pay tribute tonight to the couple still very much in love.

Also...sentencing for a conman who walked away with over a hundred thousand pounds worth of precious gems from some of the city's most prestigious jewellers...simply by asking to borrow them. Marcus Powell will explain all later.

We all remember the tragic death of 10 year old Damilola Taylor...well now his Dad is taking time out to speak to London's kids, warning them of the dangers of carrying a knife. Ronke's spent the day with Richard Taylor as he tries to make sense of his grief and build a lasting legacy for Damilola

Glen Goodman's got a job many a woman would envy - he's live at the Young Vic with a certain Mr Jude Law

Sticking with Movie stars....Our film buff James King is getting ready to do his star turn on this weekend's releases..

London Tonight: Thursday October 19th

Good Afternoon, Good people of Greater London...

Thursday's here - so very nearly the end of the week, but not a single sign of a slowdown on the newsfront. Busy today, busy, busy...

Let's start with the Mayor - given the all-clear in the High Court, with the judge ruling that Mr Livingstone's likening of a Jewish reporter to a Nazi guard last year did NOT bring the Mayor's office into disrepute. End of story - now there's a row brewing over who should pay for all the legal shenanigans. Our man Harris will have all the detail on that.... before we ask what you think.

Meanwhile, Jon Gilbert will have the lowdown on a new fare-structure for the trains going in and out of the capital. It uses the tube zone network to standardise ticket - the idea is to simplify travel round the wicket. But will it?

Wembley next and... would you believe, we're not going to be tell you that opening day has been put back yet again...? In fact, after months of arguments and legal wrangling, the company that owns the place and the company that's building it have called a truce. The result is... well, Liz Wickham will have more on that.

Now, we all know the worst sound in the world is the high-pitch whine of a mosquito as it prepares to gorge itself on... well, you. But it seems some very clever technical chaps have now come up with their own high-pitched whine and are selling it in a box... called 'the mosquito'. Ealing Council says it terribly good for shooing noisy thugs off the streets. Straight up. The council says it works - and Ronke Phillips will tell you more.

We'll also be hearing from Dustin Hoffman in a rather 'off-the-wall' interview with our Tamzin... and just for you, we'll be testing the 'best filled chocolate' in the world, as voted by the Academy of Chocolate, obviously - it's a tough job but someone's got it do it.....

Another senseless murder makes our programme tonight I'm afraid. You may remember this time last week the case of the cheerful 19 year old lad, walking his girlfriend home, stabbed for, it seems, no reason at all. His devastated girlfriend and mother have given an interview for the first time; Ronke spoke to them.

What's going on at Olympics HQ? The American businessman Jack Lemley, who was given the job of making 2012 a roaring success, has quit after just 7 months. Now .. These things happen... But this really has come as a bolt from the blue. Jon Gilbert has been investigating.

Building works at a hospital ...And a mysterious skeleton is unearthed. We have the tale of a 40 year old unsolved murder ..

Did you know that London is the most expensive place in Europe to go to the flicks? �17.50 at the Odeon Leicester Square... Unbelievable! But don't despair, Liz has been hunting for cheaper London nights at the pictures..

Simon Harris - along with the London Assembly - has been asking the question .. Is London Underground "consultant" Bob Kiley really worth 3,600 pounds a day? Yes, you read that right. Wonder what the answer is..

And Jasmine has been to meet Deacon Blue ... Those Scottish heartthrobs (if you are over 35..!) have a new album out.

Good afternoon to you.

Yet another busy old day in the capital.

Today we've been investigating the growing trend of girl gang violence. Why's it happening? Can it be stopped? We'll be talking to a teenage model who was recently attacked.

Plus could there be more tragedy on the Thames? The mum of a man killed in the Marchioness disaster takes a seriously brave step to protest at plans to reduce training times for boatmen. We'll be asking for your views on that one.

In sport we're down at Stamford Bridge, as Mourinho asks why it took so long for Petr Cech to get to hospital after that skull fracture. We'll also have the latest ahead of the Chelsea's match with Barcelona tomorrow night. Will the Blues pull it off?

LONDON TONIGHT: Monday October 16th

Afternoon to you all - it's been a right old trip down memory lane today, with Tamzin talking to that mountain of rock Meat Loaf! What a legend!
He's got the third of his 'Bat Out of Hell' albums out next week - can you believe the first one was released all the way back in 1977??? How heart-sinking was THAT for us,shall we say "experienced" ones, who can remember it like it was yesterday... (and yes, tragically, have been humming the hits and vroom vroom noises all day...)

Onto to the more serious news of the day - and if someone knocked at your door, looking for any information which might help police solve a particular crime, you'd probably assume they were police officers themselves - we've all seen The Bill - it's called "door to door" enquiries, Guv - well, a trial in Surrey using CIVILIANS for such jobs has been hailed a huge success - Marcus is onto that one for us and we'll be asking for your opinions.

Then there's everything from plans for double-decker trains for the capital (and yes, the bridges ARE a problem) to how you could have your very own waxwork image displayed at Madame Tussauds - not to mention to West End property that cost �45 - honest!

First up: what could be lurking in your loaf?

There's a safety alert at a Kent bread factory, after pieces of glass and a needle were found in the packaging for Kingsmill loaves. Accident? Sabotage?

The police and food standards watchdogs are investigating - we will, of course, have the very latest.

We now know the first winners AND casualties of the capital's newspaper war.
Circulation figures for The Evening Standard, London Lite and The London Paper have been announced.
The Standard's putting a brave face on them - but can it really be happy with how it's fared against the two new freebies?

And we've just got the name of the firm that's emerged as a favourite to build London's multi-million pound Olympic Stadium.
It's already had a hand in creating a landmark sports venue in north London - but don't worry: it isn't the team behind Wembley (or we might have to start thinking about our Olympics being in 2013..in Cardiff!). Talks have begun with the Team McAlpine Consortium, which is in line to be named as the venue's design and construction company in the New Year.

Tamzin's had a sit-down with Hollywood funnyman Chevy Chase, as he prepares for the Secret Policeman's Ball at the Royal Albert Hall tomorrow. Find out what he has to say about being involved in a British comedy institution.

Willsy will be delivering all the best sports news, as usual - including reaction from Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson to THAT blunder. He apparently says he can't understand why he's getting so much stick.

FREDDIE (where's the) STARR..? by Ben Scotchbrook

"Over to Ben now who's live in Camden. Ben..." says Katie in the studio.

"Up yours..." may have been a somewhat unorthodox way to kick off, but that was the sort of mood I was in.

You see, I was at the Proud Gallery with Martin (one of our cameramen) to cover an exhibition celebrating 40 years of the Sun's front pages. Sounds great, and if we're honest, the 'love it or loathe it' champion of all-things tabloid has printed some crackers over the years, not least, "Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster".

Anyway, as Martin and I walked in, we were looking forward to doing a live wandering round a gallery... rolling in a bit of a pre-recorded interview with former editor, Kelvin MacKenzie... and THEN chatting live with Freddie Starr: the big question - did he or didn't he? Excellent. That's what had been planned - that's what we were looking forward to.

Only, as we're lugging the camera-kit up the stairs to the gallery, the phone goes, and news-editor Lizzie tells me "Freddie's not coming. His agent says he's decided not to do it. He won't get in the car and he's turned his phone off". While I'm saying "B****r", Lizzie doesn't have time for such niceties and is already phoning around for someone to fill our 'live-sized' hole.

Meanwhile, Martin and I are walking into the gallery - only the gallery is a barn-like marquee on top of a building, with blow-ups of Sun frontpages sprawled around the edge. (Anyone who found themselves out and about on this particular Wednesday may remember the heavens not so much opening as emptying across London - which explained the army of people mopping up and putting out heaters.) Don't get me wrong - Sun-lovers should go see, but it just wasn't the TV-tastic environment we always hope for.

So, gone was wandering around the gallery: seats in the way, digital link wasn't going to work here. Gone too was Freddie (behaves like a) Starr: I frankly no longer care WHAT he snacks on. And teetering on the edge was the 3 and half minutes I'd been asked to supply for the programme: that has to merit a loud "B*****r".

However, all was not lost... while Martin and I wandered and wondered how we were going to bring a bit of life to this rather damp looking live, Lizzie had chased one of the six PR companies (could the Sun make a headline out of that?) who in turn had chased Kelvin MacKenzie... who in turn had agreed to do a turn... again. Now, there aren't many journalists who've wanted to hug MacKenzie over the years but when he was standing there, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me, I could even have given him a light peck on the cheek. So...

"Over to Ben now who's live in Camden. Ben..." says Katie in the studio.
"Up yours... Delors", I say. As if I'd say "Up Yours" to Ms Derham, live on air. Round the office may be.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: 12th Oct 2006

Good afternoon one and all.

It is not the lead story, in the sense that it isn't the most important news story, but it is the one that most people in the Office have been talking about most, if you see what I mean.... (apart from the spoof video by a Birmingham Labour MP about the leader of the Conservative Party - for that, stay with ITV1 After London Tonight!)...........but back to the Not The Lead Story story: Spurs fans blame the grass, a poor pass from a ManU player...Gooners and pretty well everyone else say it was all the fault of the TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR goalie who had turned out for England against Croatia but then boarded a space-ship to another planet: all you need to know at 6.

Now what we are leading on is a fascinating mix of terror related tales: all interesting in their own right, even more interesting when taken together.A Willesden man pleads guilty to plotting acts of terror at home and abroad; a woman tells her emotionally powerful tale of how she realised the love of her life hadn't survived the terror attack in Bali; London's finest turn out to unveil a plaque in memory of the victims of terror here in London; and the case against the Met' over the killing of Brazillian Jean Charles De Menezes will procede despite interventions by the Met' Police Authority and the Attorney General. A potent mix.

We also have Summer and Smoke, the Tennessee Williams revival in the West End starring, among others, Ms Rosamund Pyke, the beautiful double agent in Bond movie Die Another Day.

And some boxing, with a twist...

Top it off with a Polish language paper for London's growing polish community and Chrissie's weather and we can't think of a thing that is missing.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: 11th Oct 2006

Afternoon..

Our top story tonight it shocking. You remember that awful crane collapse a couple of weeks ago in Battersea? We talk to the mother of one of the men killed in the accident. Because the scene of the incident was so dangerous, her poor son's body wasn't recovered for five days. FIVE DAYS. She is, understandably, and on many levels, very upset. She talks to Phil Bayles.
In fact, do you know how many people have been killed on building sites in the last five years? Over 500. It's an enormous figure, isn't it? For the first time, there is a memorial to them. It's being unveiled today, and we'll be there.

I'm afraid we've another horror story for you too .. the young pregnant woman from High Wycombe who was, allegedly, thrown off a balcony while on holiday in Crete. She landed on railings below .. and is still extremely ill. Ronke has the full, appalling story.

We've an intriguing tale of one way to live cheaply in London that none of us here in the office had heard of before. It's kind of legal squatting.. for a peppercorn rent .. and its all official. Did you know that buildings like the old Manchester Square fire station now have ordinary folk living in them? No, neither did we. Apparently it's more effective than having lots of security men patrolling..

Simon Harris has been talking to some of the 200 businesses that are being forced to make way for the 2012 Olympics; Ben Scotchbrook's been laughing at the fabulous exhibition of famous Sun newspaper frontpages.. Tamzin's been to meet Mr Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher (apparently he didn't like the rain, poor love) .. And we've the story of the miniature pony found roaming free on Wood Green High Road. No, really.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: 10th Oct 2006

Hello from the London Tonight team... its another packed show with some truly powerful stories.

For example how do you feel about the new advert showing the bus blown up in Tavistock Square with the line, "Last year, four suicidal British men got our attention. Unfortunately, 983 others didn't". It's been created to highlight mental illness. It certainly does that but we'll be asking if it goes too far.

Then there's the appalling injuries to Mark Dietrich. His crime was to ask for a van, blocking the road, to be moved. It resulted in Mark having every bone in his face broken as his attacker jumped on his head with both feet. Not surprisingly, police are desperate to catch this maniac.

Remember Lotfi Raissi. He was the pilot from West London who was jailed on suspicion of teaching the September the 11th hijackers how to fly. After five months in prison the Algerian was freed without charge. Now he wants compensation but the Home Office is saying no. We'll be hearing from Lotfi at the start of the case he hopes will finally bring him justice...and cash.

We'll also be catching up with the Von Trapp's...not the originals you'll understand but the cast of the new West End show "The Sound of Music". It promises to be another huge hit for Andrew Lloyd Webber.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: 9th Oct 2006

Hello and welcome to another week of London Tonight.

Richard and Gloria Taylor are remarkable people: it was their son, Damilola, who was killed on a stairwell in Peckham six years ago.

They have displayed a quiet dignity throughout, despite the horror of what happened to their son and the faltering progress in bringing his killers to justice. They've put up with a lot. And today they heard their son's young killers had got 8 years, of which they will have to serve 4. And that might be it.
We've been talking to Richard and you can hear him at 6.

Right. Time for a break.

You go to a pub' or a wine bar or a restaurant and you know from June next year if you smoke .... Well, you can't anymore.

But you thought if your habit was strong enough you could step out onto the pavement and satisfy your craving. Not if Westminster have their way. Based on reports from Scotland that the celtic fringe gets a bit noisy when it steps out onto the pavement for a ciggie, Westminster say "not on our patch!" Alastair is not alone in being up in arms about it, though he and his crew are a declining gang.

But, more important than him ( "What!", screamed AS) we'd like to hear what you think: a ban too far or should the polluters be run out of the restaurants, off the pavement and into the Thames? (thats enough from the antis! Ed) We look forward to hearing from you at 6 and readings the best bits out at the end of the programme.

A muslim copper in the Diplomatic Protection Squad tells his boss he's not happy standing guard outside the Israeli Embassy. The boss says OK and moves him to other duties. His wife is Lebanese, his dad's Syrian, he's got more family in Lebanon and Israel is pumping rockets, tanks and soldiers into the battle zone while Hezbollah are pumping rockets back at Israel.
But none of this is happening in Knightsbridge. The Israeli Embassy has always been one of London's most secure buildings. He wears uniform.
But he says he was frightened.
Or did he, as some have suggested, have another agenda? A moral objection?
Met' Commissioner Sir Ian Blair is investigating and so are we: we also wants your thoughts on this one, tonight at 6.

The second dilemma has been unfolding in Windsor these last couple of nights: the muslim owner of a dairy wants to put a mosque in his factory so his workers can pray. This has met with some serious local objections and a fair bit of opportunist racism. But its a tough one to police as Marcus Powell will explain.

Equally difficult to explain is why a mum, who contacted an out of surgery hours health service with tummy pains, saw 2 doctors, spoke with 6 others and still died. She was told she had all sorts of things but that she was getting better. She wasn't, she had septicaemia and it proved fatal.

No connection, I promise, but on Day 2 of Ken Livingstone's appeal we also report on the publication of the follow up to Peter Pan's Adventures in Wonderland...

Some Kung Fu monks seem the only way to round that lot off: so we'll be asking them to do just that.

Well.. first up, it's the Mayor again. Remember that incident with the Evening Standard reporter last year? Likening a Jewish journalist to a concentration camp guard? And the huge outcry that followed those comments? Accusations of anti-semitism - hotly denied? Well at the time he was suspended from duties for 4 weeks, and today he starts his appeal. And the outcry hasn't got any quieter ... Ironically its on a day that is the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street, when thousands of protestors in the East End decided they wouldn't tolerate Oswald Mosley's fascist Black Shirts, with extremely violent results. Marcus Powell has been talking to a man who was there.

A turkish man got 8 years today for people smuggling. He and his gang helped get .. wait for it .. 100,000 illegal Turkish immigrants into the UK in the last 10 years. Its not human trafficking.. these people definitely wanted to come here.. but the scale of the crime is unbelievable nonetheless. We'll have all the details.

We've got all the background on the con artist who scammed his way into a royal premiere... even managed to have a chat with Charles and Camilla.. he says he did it for a bet.. for 100,000 pounds, apparently.. Liz has been to meet him.

We've a sneak preview of the newly restored architectural gem of a Hawksmoor church, the one in Bloomsbury. For years it's been the home of vagrants and has looked distinctly sorry for itself .. believe me, you won't recognise it now.

First - in a story that sounds frighteningly similar to the Peter Woodhams case, a father's been murdered outside his own home, after an apparent scuffle with a gang of youths. Piers Hopkirk's been on the scene in Hackney since this morning - he'll update us at six.

"Toni" was, as far as his wife was concerned, a loving husband. He cried at black and white movies. He secretly brought her favourite teddy along to their wedding. But Anthony Imiela was also known as the M25 rapist. Today, his wife's spoken for the first time - she accepts he is the man behind those shocking crimes. But she is also standing by him. Find out why tonight.

Now George Michael. First of all - a confession. I've already got my tickets for his concerts in London later this year. So I admit that I am a bit of fan. But still, I don't really understand why someone quite so famous manages to get caught out quite so many times. This time, arrested in his car (stopped at those lights on Cricklewood Lane where it meets Hendon Way, if you know that bit of North London) and taken to hospital. Oh George.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Thurs 28th Sept

Afternoon all,

We've got the most mixed of mixed bags this evening, and we kick off with an exclusive.

Now, when you're walking home tonight, take a good look at the houses and homes down your road. Nice curtains in the windows perhaps. Well-kept front lawn with fresh paint on the front door, even. Ever wonder if it's all as proper INSIDE...? Well, the 'London Tonight' cameras were the only cameras there when the police smashed down the front door of an innocent looking home in Enfield this morning - Glen Goodman will tell you what they found.

Now, while Sir John Betjeman, famously, was no fan of Slough, local councillors argue it must have something going for it... Why else would huge numbers Polish immigrants be heading there? In fact, the council says it desperately needs more cash from the government to cope with the population growth. But, how are councillors proving they've got their figures right? Phil Bayles will have the rather unsavoury answer.

You've probably heard the recent horror stories about dogs attacking small children. One poor girl was killed by rottweilers in Leicester, while a little boy from Chichester was hideously scarred when another rottweiler mauled him. This evening, Liz Wickham tells the story of yet another toddler - from Dartford - savaged by a pit bull terrier. His parents are livid because, while the dog has been destroyed, its owners will not be punished, at all. Do you think they should be? Well, this is the story we'll be asking for your opinions on this evening.

Edward Forbes Smiley - the third. Sounds very grand, doesn't he? Certainly had the reputation of a gentleman - and a scholar, in fact. An expert in antique maps, respected around the world... right up to the point experts realised he'd been stealing antique maps around the world - the British Library among the noted institutions he targeted. He's just been jailed in America for 3 and half years. Piers Hopkirk on that.

Perhaps though the jewel in this evening's crown is a visit from a true legend. A movie actor who carved out his eternal reputation as the gentleman with a twinkle in his eye in not one but two series of comedy classics. Younger viewers may recognise his honeyed tones as the voice of the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter movies. He's just released his autobiography. It's called 'Hello'... of course. Ladies and Gentleman, Leslie Phillips will be live in the studio.

London Tonight: Wednesday 27th September

Hello to you from the news factory -

Hope you're well and not TOO busy this afternoon.

This evening's programme begins with a horrific mystery - what caused a 160 foot crane to collapse in Battersea, killing two people? The driver was thrown from the cab. Another man was crushed by the debris. An investigation is underway and Piers Hopkirk will have the latest on that.

Now, you've probably noticed the nights are drawing in and the days are getting cooler. Good Lord, summer's most definitely over. Mind you, the upside is that a bit more rain might help fill up our reservoirs because boy, do they need it. Not that it'll help the residents of a flat in Hackney who've been without running water since last Thursday. Liz Wickham looks at how everyone's coping - including Thames Water.

Simon Harris, meanwhile, continues his reports on machinations in Manchester and how the Labour Party conference could affect us down in London. Today, our own Mayor has raised air-pollution as a talking point, and with four of the country's busiest airports on our patch - that could be a big, and expensive issue.

Glenn Goodman's been hanging around public toilets today - all in the name of sound journalism of course. You see, some of the older residents of Kilburn had got a little fed up with the lack of loos available to the public when they're out shopping. They drew up a brochure of the best and worst. Mr Goodman went undercover to see for himself. What you might call 'inBOGnito'....

Moving swiftly on and the story of, well, a woman who was going nowhere fast when her car key-fob stopped working. Bit strange, as she'd just put a new battery in. It was the AA man who worked out the problem. The solution was a dog called George, as Phil Bayles will explain.

Tamzin's in Leicester Square for the premiere of 'Click' - Adam Sandler & Kate Beckinsale's new offering. And Chrissie's on weather duty.

Afternoon all!

The jokes have been flying round the newsroom this afternoon - "The Drain....more like Money Down the Drain"
This, a reference to the news that since the re-opening of the underground's Waterloo & City Line - known as The Drain because of its shape - there's only been ONE day without disruption.... So what DID they spend that �40 billion on... And what WERE they doing for the five months it was closed.... we've set Piers the challenge of getting to the bottom of that one - which also got the gags going.. I won't explain...

London Tonight looks north this evening - we've sent Simon to Manchester for Labour's Party Conference. Blair's last speech to conference today - and we were all glued to the live feed in our newsroom.
Simon's been soaking up the electric atmosphere - and chatting to the London MP who's already started HIS campaign to replace TB (or at least keep Gordon out of No. 10).

There's bling... And then there's the Rio Tinto diamonds. Extremely rare, prohibitively expensive - and on show to a select few at a secret location in London, and guess who got an invitation? Phil takes you where the other news programmes just can't reach...

Jessica Simpson and baby sis Ashlee make the programme - Ashlee's just taken over as Roxie Hart in Chicago - and we're giving away tickets to tomorrow night's sell-out Jay-Z gig at the Albert Hall - Chris Martin will be making a guest appearance on stage - should be a great night!

There is - as always - much much more, but we don't want to spoil ALL the surprises, do we now.....

London Tonight: Monday September 25th

Afternoon,

A serious story to kick off with tonight. Over the weekend one man was shot and killed in Kings Cross, two men were shot in Brixton. Last week two schools in Peckham were forced to close over worries about gang warfare. It's clear there are problems with guns in this city of ours. Today a new ad campaign was launched trying to nip that problem in the bud. The posters target kids as young as 11...in an attempt to tackle the issue and put a stop to that connection with gun culture before it's begun.

Allotment owners in the East End are up in arms over plans to concrete over the plots they've lovingly tended to make way for part of the Olympic development. We talk to the greenfingered owners, both the very young and those getting on a bit. We'll also be there when the man from the London Development Agency comes to explain why it's necessary for them all to lose their plots.

Meanwhile over in South London.....It's "Time Gentlemen Please" for Youngs Brewery. Yes, the smell of malt and hops will no longer be wafting around Wandsworth - the entire operation's moving out of the Big Smoke and into Bedforshire. We're there for the last day of bottling. Let's hope Glen doesn't partake of too much of their produce and is still on his feet to tell us all about it at 6.

We've news of a new property development which could create affordable but pretty fancy housing. The Elephant and Castle gets elegant - we'll have the details.

London Tonight: Friday September 22nd

Evening - it's practically the weekend and we're going rock-tastic tonight.

Tamzin's been to the Edge (geddit??) to get an interview with U2 - she's even got Bono's thoughts on Tony Blair - so you won't want to miss that.

And as if that's not enough for one girl, she's gone totally weak at the knees at the prospect of her teen years hearthtrob, Chris Isaak, coming into the studio live - he's promising to serenade her - and she's keeping her fingers crossed that it'll be Wicked Game. So, one satisfied customer tonight - hope you will be too by 6.30!

We've our usual guide to the weekend movie releases and what else to do in the capital - including how YOU can become part of a new ITV programme.

Willsy's looking ahead to a weekend of sport - and he's excited tonight too - about our competition for a luxurious golfing weekend away.... We keep telling him he's not allow to enter, but I think I'll have to confiscate his mobile phone just in case...

Our top story tonight is the report findings on how London coped on the day of the terror bombings - some criticism, some praise - but interesting stories from the non-injured victims, who felt they didn't know what to do or where to turn on the day. London Tonight: Thursday 21st September

Afternoon everyone,

Thursday afternoon already... that light gleaming at the end of the tunnel is a dirty great lie-in on Saturday morning. (Apologies to those with young children.)

Now, this evening's programme - and we start with an exclusive interview with Jane Bowden, the fiancee of Peter Woodhams. He was shot dead outside his home in Custom House 4 weeks ago today. Now, while the hunt for his killer goes on, Jane is moving the last of her possessions out of that home. As Piers Hopkirk will explain, she can't bear to live there with their young son anymore.

Yesterday, a man not known for his pro-Government views, Abu Izzadeen, challenged the Home Secretary as he addressed the Muslim community in Leyton. "How dare you come to a Muslim area?" John Reid was asked. Well, that poses certain questions about London's multicultural society. Simon Harris will try to come up with some answers.

She's 74 years old and she's just won a court battle over 3 inches of land. However, the judge ordered Malica Markos to pay her neighbour's court costs. She can't afford to do that - and today she's been left sobbing in the street as her house was re-posessed and boarded up.
Paul Fitzgerald has the full story from Leigh-on-Sea in Essex.

Who remembers the Green Cross Code man, Tufty and his gang, Charley the Cat - all warning young children of the dangers in life. If you do, you're as old as we are. Chrissie (much younger than we are) has been taking a look at 60 years of safety films ahead of a season of them at the National Theatre.

Meanwhile Phil Bayles reports on your chance to be immortalised as a wax-faced bus-conductor - but it'll cost you. Not him telling you, that is... being immortalised. Steve Hargrave has the back-stage low-down on Beyonce's no-show at the Mobo awards. Someone who WILL show tonight is the pub landlord, Al Murray, in the studio to talk about another Secret Policeman's Ball. Oh, and then we'll be giving away a pair of tickets to the Ball itself.

LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Tues 19th Sept

Hello!

Tamzin is back from her well earned break and Katie is presenting the ITV Evening News at 6.30 - so Tamzin is in one of the hot-seats tonight!

She only got back at the weekend so wasn't able to interview Oliver Stone about his powerful and controversial 9/11 film WORLD TRADE CENTER. Steve has done a great job, however, and we're sure you will find it fascinating.

Talking of 9/11, we're sure you will all remember that day in August when Heathrow and other airports ground to a halt as an alleged plot to blow airliners out of the skies was discovered. In the days and weeks that followed security was tightened, bag allowances changed, liquids banned and all the rest of it. Very sensible. To make us safe.
So, how come a man could fly to Amsterdam using his 2 year old daughter's passport????? Liz is finding out on your behalf.

London's telephone numbers have been through a lot of changes in recent years: 01 - 020 - and more to come. But cast your mind back to Whitehall 1212 and Mayfair 3423 - ah, those were the days of black bakelite hand sets and women pushing and pulling plugs in manual exchanges. Well the telephone directories of that age are going "on-line" and it's given Damian the chance to take a look back at the old days when Britain's phone system was owned and controlled by a division of Her Majesty's Post Office.

A man in Croydon may have seen his fixed penalty payment get lost in the post or it may have got lost at either end of its journey: either way, the authorities seemed to lose track of it. So they picked up his car. And sold it! He got it back but, as Ronke explains, he now has even more reasons to be angry.

Also, what the Met' told the Courts about their responsibilities over the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and a full round up of all the news that matters.

And, hurricane or heatwave by the end of the week? "Maybe both" said Chrissie at our meeting: she'll tell you why at the end of the show.

We also have the final chapter in a brutal and yet intriguing story of paedophilia. Sent to prison today for 13 years, a man who, publicly, was Mr Nice Guy in the borough architect's office. But secretly, he disguised himself to assault young girls. Piers has the full story.

London Tonight: Friday September 15th

Hi. Sorry we are a little later than normal but we had a two minutes silence for West Ham's result last night and it lasted longer than it should have.
Our Ken is still in mourning but the rest of us keep saying First Leg. First Leg.....

Now tonight a fascinating story that could affect us all. The problem of affordable housing is real and immediate. It has to be solved and, inevitably, we're all going to have to help.
So, we looked at Westminster's ingenious solution: offer people living in Council Houses that are now too big for them a chance - and a bit of a sweetener - to move out to a smaller place and let the needy in.
It sounded a good idea and it turned into a brilliant idea. But Westminster are running out of cash for the sweeteners. So will it stop? Will others find the money to have a go? Will the Mayor or the Government step in to keep it going?
Phil has been exploring.

We all know we have a drug problem in London and we are all angry that it is wrecking so many young lives. But we are shocked to discover how many young youngsters, 9-12, who are involved not only as users but also as dealers. Glen has been looking at the worrying numbers.

Daddy Cool is the latest retro musical, a tribute to the work of 70s stars BONEY M. (Romilly says she remembers all the words and Alastair says he can even remember dancing to them). Stars of the West End show, Javine (rear of the Year) and Harvey (So Solid Crew) are with us!!!!

Also tonight - an incredible story about a restaurant where a certain Mr Mourinho often books a table. The staff there were rather amazed to find a bugging device in a plug socket. London Tonight: Wednesday September 13th

Hello All,

Dramatic goings on in Kent today .. And you don't often get to say that. The police are claiming they've carried out their biggest even guns seizure, swooping on a house in Dartford at 6 this morning, arresting a 55 year old man, and making off with hundreds of guns. It's not a straightforward tale.. The man arrested did have a gun license, but police are sure this is a significant victory in the battle on illegal weapons in this country. Ronke's there to explain all.

Hugo Chavez is the president of Venezuela. You may remember there was some controversy when he visited London earlier this year .. Not everyone was thrilled that our mayor was hobnobbing with a man who'd been pretty damning about America and Britain in the past. Well now the friendship that was burgeoning then between Ken and Hugo looks set to be sealed with a goodwill deal. Apparently we're going to advise them on policing and housing - and in return we're going to get some cheap oil for our buses. Sounds .. Well .. A little strange, doesn't it? The Tories certainly think so, and have been grilling Ken during Question Time today. We'll have all the background.

We've got an exclusive interview with the father of Peter Woodhams, the young man gunned down outside his home. He's begging for information, and for anyone shielding the murderer to break their silence. It's powerful and emotional stuff.

And the powerful stuff doesn't stop there, as we'll be in in New York for the 5th anniversary of 9/11. The pictures still have a shocking power, and we'll be talking to the mother of a young Londoner who died that day. We'll also be at the London offices of Cantor Fitzgerald; you'll remember that it was a firm who's New York office was devastated in the atrocity. Today they've been hosting a huge charitable appeal, with a number of sporting heroes doing their bit, including that new royal world champion, Zara Philips.

We've some good news for London house hunters, with details of a new shared ownership scheme which could, just could, allow you to get a foot on the property ladder even if you're not loaded...

But ... The highlight has to be the Hoff. He's in the Guinness book of records as the most watched man on television. He's huge in Germany as ein Rock Star. He's been having a bit of a tough time with the British tabloids . He's got a new autobiography out and he could well have a new number one single. He's also very tall .. And he's in our studio. LONDON TONIGHT TONIGHT: Fri July 8th

Alastair's busy interviewing a major politician for tonight's national ITV News - and with Tamzin enjoying a few days off - Romilly is joining us as our other presenter tonight. She's busy getting her head around the programme, so I'm writing the email this afternoon.

Tonight we start with the story of Rocky Dawson, shot dead in front of his young children in Hornchurch. Police have done something they've never done before - offered a �20,000 reward - just for an address. There's someone they want to speak to about the crime - tonight we'll show that person's picture and ask if you know where they live. We also hear from Rocky's family in their only television interview.

Also - an incredible film from an incredible young man. Thomas Ikimi's cousin was Anthony Fatayi-Williams, who was killed in the July 7th attacks last year. Thomas has spent the last year documenting how his family have come to terms with those events. Tonight he's also made us a film - all about it. It's powerful stuff.

That plus we hear from Sigourney Weaver - Willsy's got the sport - and Chrissie's here with the weekend weather.

Oh - and the final of our "Future London" series - as we ask a sci-fi writer to predict how the capital will cope in the years ahead.

LONDON TONIGHT: Thursday September 7th

Crikey! What a day! Will he? Won't he? In the end, Tony Blair ended all the talk right here at a secondary school in North London - by kind of telling us what we pretty much knew - he will stand down by next year - but won't give a precise date. Well, it all happened at a school in St John's Wood and Simon Harris has been speaking to the youngsters who had a schoolday they'll never forget.

But our top story tonight - and the one we want to hear from you on - is the sheer anger of a mum whose 11 year old daughter isn't allowed on the free school bus, because she hasn't been christened.
It's a church school and they say only children who have been christened or whose parents live in the parish are eligible - is it fair? Watch Jon's report and you tell us.
